Egyptian Walking Onion – Tree Onion – Allium x prolifeforum

An unusual and interesting perennial vegetable for the garden.

Tree onions are ‘top setting’ onions meaning they produce onion bulblis (a cluster of mini onions) at the top of the stem.

They are very ornamnamental and interesting to grow.

These plants are multi use:

  • The stems can be used like chives/spring onion
  • As the plant matures some of the shallot sized onions can be harvested – but leave some to form bulblis on top –
  • The bulblis that forms on the top stems can be left to get heavy and droop down, when they touch the ground they root hence the name ‘walking onion’ these set new plants and ‘walk’ around your garden
  • Once you have one plant you could have a continued supply of onion plants in the garden for ever more and a day!
  • It is also really intereting to have in the garden as the stems curl and twist and look quite unusual.
