Perennial Leek Babbington – Allium ampeloprasum babingtonii
An wild and interesting perennial vegetable for the garden.
These leeks are ‘top setting’ meaning they produce flower bulblis at the top of the stem and grow in clumps which can be divided over time.
They are ornamnamental with their purple cluster flowers and can grow to 4-5ft, happy in any soil and tolerant of shady and windy sites.
- The stems can be harvested leaving the main bulb over the years and they the clumps divided and used as wished and replanted.
- The bulblis that forms on the top stems can be left to drop down, when they touch the ground they these set new plants.
- Once you have one plant you could have a continued supply of leek plants in the garden for ever more and a day!
